westmidlands landscapes are experienced and passionate landscape gardeners based in Redditch but cover all of the West Midlands, Worcestershire and Warwickshire and landscaped gardens in solihull ,Stratford and Warwick.

We have been striving to create individual Gardens and driveways since 2007 and since then we have noticed a growing need and demand to be more aware of what impact building our gardens have on the environment, this has been mirrored in the world famous and prestigious Chelsea flower show having an “artisan” garden category for the first time in its history this year(2011) which is centred around using reclaimed materials in garden design.

How can we incorporate reclaimed materials into our garden?

There are many fun ways to use recycled materials if you are creative ,One excellent way of doing this is to use re-claimed scaffolding boards for decking.

The project featured in this blog had a brief of creating a hidden woodland deck in the garden of a cottage in rural redditch ,West Midlands ,we felt that using reclaimed scaffold boards to form the deck area would create the perfect rustic look that was required and coupled with the artisan ballustrade created out of reclaimed larch and Pine the look would be complete.

Are recycled timbers Safe for use on a deck? and will they last?

Before the deck was put down it was de nailed and any warped or badly damaged boards were put to one side and not used, after the deck was installed we shot blasted and sanded the boards to remove any impurities and splinters that would compromise the decks performance, following that they were coated twice with a quality decking oil to ensure future protection from the elements

This deck is no different structurally to any of our decks that we build, it is formed out of a 6×2″ beam and joist construction set at 400mm centres as per guidlines set by trada, also using stainless steel decking srews through out, so a deck built by us will last 20 years if well maintained.
